Born in Seoul, South Korea in 1971, Chee-Yun began playing the violin at the age of four. Her parents recognized her talent early on and enrolled her in the Juilliard School's Pre-College Division in New York City when she was just eight years old. Under the guidance of her teachers, including Dorothy DeLay and Hyo Kang, Chee-Yun quickly developed into a prodigious talent. She won numerous competitions as a young musician, including the Young Concert Artists International Auditions in 1989, which launched her career as a soloist. Chee-Yun has since performed with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Philadelphia Orchestra, and the Hong Kong Philharmonic.
