She was born into a family of musicians, with her father being a composer and her mother a pianist. Her parents recognized her musical talent at a young age and began her piano lessons when she was just four years old. Gornostaeva's early musical education was under the tutelage of her mother, who was a strict teacher. She later studied at the Central Music School in Moscow, where she was taught by renowned pianist and pedagogue Heinrich Neuhaus. Neuhaus was a significant influence on Gornostaeva's musical development, and she later described him as her "musical father." In 1948, Gornostaeva graduated from the Central Music School and went on to study at the Moscow Conservatory. She studied under the guidance of Neuhaus and Yakov Flier, another prominent pianist and pedagogue. Gornostaeva's talent and hard work paid off, and she graduated with honors in 1953. After completing her studies, Gornostaeva began her career as a concert pianist. She quickly gained recognition for her exceptional talent and became a sought-after performer.
