After completing his studies, Schonzeler worked as a conductor in various opera houses in Germany, including the State Opera in Stuttgart and the Municipal Theater in Wiesbaden. In 1951, Schonzeler moved to England, where he became the conductor of the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra. He remained in this position for ten years, during which time he established the orchestra as one of the leading ensembles in the country. He also conducted the London Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and the BBC Symphony Orchestra, among others. Schonzeler's reputation as a conductor continued to grow, and he was invited to conduct orchestras around the world. He made his debut in the United States in 1958, conducting the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. He also conducted the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra, among others. In addition to his work as a conductor, Schonzeler was also a prolific author. He wrote several books on music, including biographies of Mozart and Beethoven, as well as a history of opera. His books were widely acclaimed for their scholarship and insight, and they remain important works in the field of musicology. Schonzeler's contributions to the world of music were recognized with numerous awards and honors. He was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1961, and he received the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany in 1974.
