The Austrian Radio Symphony Orchestra (ORF Radio-Symphonieorchester Wien) is a world-renowned classical music ensemble based in Vienna, Austria. The orchestra was founded in 1969 as the orchestra of the Austrian Broadcasting Corporation (ORF) and has since become one of the most respected and sought-after orchestras in the world. The birth of the Austrian Radio Symphony Orchestra can be traced back to the early 1960s, when the ORF began to establish its own orchestra to perform on its radio and television programs. The orchestra was officially founded in 1969, with Milan Horvat as its first chief conductor. Horvat led the orchestra until 1979, during which time the orchestra established itself as a major force in the classical music world. In the years that followed, the Austrian Radio Symphony Orchestra continued to grow and evolve under the leadership of a series of distinguished conductors. In 1980, Leif Segerstam became the orchestra's chief conductor, followed by Lothar Zagrosek in 1982 and Pinchas Steinberg in 1987. Under Steinberg's leadership, the orchestra began to tour extensively, performing in major concert halls and festivals throughout Europe and Asia. In 1991, Dennis Russell Davies became the orchestra's chief conductor, a position he held until 1996. During his tenure, the orchestra continued to expand its repertoire and perform with some of the world's most renowned soloists. In 1996, Bertrand de Billy took over as chief conductor, a position he held until 2002. Under de Billy's leadership, the orchestra continued to tour extensively and perform at major festivals, including the Salzburg Festival and the Vienna Festival. In 2002, Cornelius Meister became the orchestra's chief conductor, a position he held until 2018. During his tenure, the orchestra continued to grow and evolve, performing a wide range of repertoire and collaborating with some of the world's most renowned soloists and conductors. Meister also led the orchestra on numerous tours, including a highly successful tour of Japan in 2015. In 2018, Marin Alsop became the orchestra's chief conductor, making her the first woman to hold the position in the orchestra's history. Alsop is one of the most respected and sought-after conductors in the world, and her appointment was seen as a major milestone for the orchestra. Under her leadership, the orchestra has continued to expand its repertoire and collaborate with some of the world's most renowned soloists. Throughout its history, the Austrian Radio Symphony Orchestra has been recognized for its outstanding performances and recordings. The orchestra has won numerous awards, including the Grand Prix du Disque, the Diapason d'Or, and the German Record Critics' Award. The orchestra has also been nominated for several Grammy Awards, including Best Orchestral Performance and Best Classical Album. Some of the orchestra's most notable performances include its appearances at the Salzburg Festival, the Vienna Festival, and the Lucerne Festival. The orchestra has also performed at major concert halls around the world, including Carnegie Hall in New York, the Royal Albert Hall in London, and the Berlin Philharmonic Hall. In addition to its performances, the Austrian Radio Symphony Orchestra is also committed to education and outreach. The orchestra has a strong education program, which includes concerts and workshops for young people, as well as collaborations with schools and universities.
