Euskadiko Orkestra Sinfonikoa, also known as the Basque National Orchestra, is a classical music ensemble based in San Sebastian, Spain. The orchestra was founded in 1982 by the Basque Government with the aim of promoting and developing classical music in the Basque Country. The orchestra's first conductor was Theo Alcántara, who led the ensemble until 1986. In 1987, the orchestra appointed its second conductor, Miguel Ángel Gómez Martínez, who served as the music director until 1994. During his tenure, the orchestra gained national and international recognition for its performances and recordings. In 1994, the orchestra appointed its third conductor, Gilbert Varga, who served as the music director until 2008. Under Varga's leadership, the orchestra continued to expand its repertoire and collaborate with renowned soloists and conductors. In 2008, the orchestra appointed its current music director, Robert Treviño, who has been praised for his innovative programming and dynamic conducting style. Over the years, the Basque National Orchestra has performed in some of the world's most prestigious concert halls, including the Royal Albert Hall in London, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris. The orchestra has also collaborated with some of the world's most renowned soloists, including Lang Lang, Yo-Yo Ma, and Anne-Sophie Mutter. One of the orchestra's most notable performances was its debut at the BBC Proms in 2007, where it performed a program of Spanish and Basque music to critical acclaim. The orchestra has also been recognized for its recordings, including a Grammy nomination for its recording of the complete orchestral works of Manuel de Falla. In addition to its performances and recordings, the Basque National Orchestra is committed to promoting music education and outreach programs in the Basque Country. The orchestra's education programs include workshops, masterclasses, and concerts for young musicians and students.
