He was born on September 26, 1960, in Bergerac, France. DeLangle grew up in a family of musicians, and his father was a saxophonist. He started playing the saxophone at the age of nine and quickly developed a passion for the instrument. DeLangle studied at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris, where he was a student of Daniel Deffayet. He graduated with a first prize in saxophone in 1982. He then went on to study with Jean-Marie Londeix, who is considered one of the greatest saxophonists of the 20th century. In 1983, DeLangle won the prestigious International Saxophone Competition in Paris, which launched his career as a soloist. He has since performed with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the New York Philharmonic. He has also collaborated with renowned conductors such as Pierre Boulez, Sir Simon Rattle, and Daniel Barenboim. DeLangle has recorded numerous albums, including works by composers such as Pierre Boulez, Luciano Berio, and Philippe Leroux. He has also premiered many new works for the saxophone, including pieces by Kaija Saariaho, Pascal Dusapin, and Michael Jarrell. One of DeLangle's most significant achievements was his collaboration with the composer Henri Dutilleux. Dutilleux wrote his saxophone concerto, "L'arbre des songes," specifically for DeLangle, and the two worked closely together on the piece. DeLangle premiered the concerto in 1985 with the Orchestre National de France, and it has since become one of the most important works in the saxophone repertoire. DeLangle has received numerous awards and honors throughout his career. In 1999, he was awarded the Victoire de la Musique, which is the most prestigious award for classical music in France. He was also awarded the Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in 2003, which is a French order of merit for cultural and artistic achievements. He has been instrumental in expanding the repertoire for the instrument and has helped to establish the saxophone as a serious classical instrument.
