Role:ComposerBirth:December 25, 1896 in Gaillac, FranceDeath:August 6, 1954 in Fontainebleau, FrancePeriod:ModernGenre:ChamberFernande Decrück was a French composer and pianist who was born on August 17, 1896, in Valenciennes, France. She was the daughter of a music teacher and began her musical education at a young age. She showed a natural talent for music and was encouraged by her parents to pursue a career in music. Decrück studied at the Paris Conservatory, where she was a student of Isidor Philipp and Nadia Boulanger. She won several prizes for her compositions, including the Prix de Rome in 1921 for her cantata "La Vierge à la crèche." This prestigious award allowed her to study in Rome for several years, where she continued to develop her skills as a composer. Decrück's music is characterized by its lyrical melodies, rich harmonies, and sophisticated use of counterpoint. She was influenced by the music of Debussy, Ravel, and Stravinsky, as well as the French Baroque composers such as Couperin and Rameau. Her compositions include works for piano, chamber ensembles, orchestra, and voice. One of Decrück's most famous works is her "Sonata in C# Minor" for saxophone and piano, which was written in 1935. This piece is considered a landmark in the history of saxophone music and is still widely performed today. It is a virtuosic work that showcases the expressive capabilities of the saxophone, and its popularity has helped to establish the saxophone as a legitimate instrument in classical music. Decrück also wrote several works for piano, including her "Suite en style ancien" and "Sonata in C Minor." These pieces demonstrate her mastery of the keyboard and her ability to create music that is both technically challenging and musically satisfying. In addition to her compositions, Decrück was also an accomplished pianist and performed extensively throughout Europe. She was known for her sensitive interpretations of the music of Chopin, Schumann, and Debussy, as well as her own compositions. Decrück's career was cut short by the outbreak of World War II, which forced her to flee Paris and seek refuge in the south of France. She continued to compose during this time, but her output was limited by the difficult circumstances of the war. After the war, she returned to Paris and resumed her career as a composer and pianist. Decrück died on July 16, 1954, in Paris, at the age of 57. She left behind a legacy of beautiful music that continues to be appreciated by musicians and audiences around the world. Her contributions to the development of classical music, particularly for the saxophone, have earned her a place among the great composers of the 20th century.More....
