Born on May 23, 1948, in Tokyo, Japan, Noda grew up in a family of musicians. His father was a professional saxophonist, and his mother was a pianist. From a young age, Noda was exposed to music and began playing the saxophone at the age of 10. Noda's early musical education was primarily focused on jazz, and he was heavily influenced by the works of John Coltrane and Charlie Parker. However, he soon became interested in classical music and began studying under the tutelage of renowned saxophonist Sigurd Rascher. Noda's studies with Rascher were instrumental in shaping his musical style and approach to composition. In 1970, Noda graduated from the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music, where he studied composition under Akio Yashiro. After graduation, he began working as a freelance composer and saxophonist, performing in various ensembles and orchestras throughout Japan. Noda's breakthrough as a composer came in 1977 when he composed his first major work, "Mai," for solo saxophone. The piece was inspired by traditional Japanese dance and featured complex rhythms and intricate melodies. "Mai" quickly gained popularity and has since become one of Noda's most famous works. Over the years, Noda has composed numerous works for saxophone, including "Improvisation I," "Improvisation II," and "Improvisation III." These pieces showcase Noda's unique approach to composition, which blends elements of jazz, classical music, and traditional Japanese music. In addition to his work as a composer, Noda is also a highly regarded saxophonist. He has performed with numerous orchestras and ensembles throughout the world, including the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, and the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. Noda's contributions to the world of classical music have been recognized with numerous awards and honors. In 1985, he was awarded the Japan Music Pen Club Award for his contributions to contemporary music. In 1997, he was awarded the Medal with Purple Ribbon by the Japanese government for his contributions to the arts. Today, Noda continues to compose and perform, and his works are widely performed and studied by saxophonists and musicians around the world.
