Yan Levionnois is a French cellist who has established himself as one of the most promising young musicians of his generation. Born in 1986 in Paris, Levionnois began playing the cello at the age of six and quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument. He studied at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris, where he was a student of Philippe Muller and Jean-Guihen Queyras. Levionnois made his debut as a soloist at the age of 16, performing the Saint-Saëns Cello Concerto No. 1 with the Orchestre National de Lorraine. Since then, he has performed as a soloist with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the Orchestre National de France, the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, the Orchestre de Paris, the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra. In addition to his work as a soloist, Levionnois is also an active chamber musician. He has performed with many of the world's leading chamber ensembles, including the Ébène Quartet, the Modigliani Quartet, and the Trio Wanderer. He is a founding member of the Trio Karénine, which has quickly established itself as one of the most exciting young piano trios on the international scene. Levionnois has won numerous awards and prizes throughout his career. In 2005, he won first prize at the International Cello Competition in Liezen, Austria. In 2007, he was awarded the Prix Thierry Scherz at the Verbier Festival Academy, and in 2008, he won first prize at the International Johannes Brahms Competition in Austria. In 2010, he was awarded the prestigious Prix de la Fondation Safran pour la Musique, which recognizes outstanding young musicians in France. Levionnois has recorded extensively, both as a soloist and as a chamber musician. His recordings have received critical acclaim and have been praised for their technical brilliance and emotional depth. His recording of the complete Beethoven cello sonatas with pianist Guillaume Bellom was released in 2019 to great critical acclaim. Levionnois is known for his passionate and expressive playing, as well as his technical virtuosity. He is particularly admired for his ability to bring out the emotional depth and complexity of the music he performs. He is a frequent collaborator with contemporary composers and has premiered many new works for the cello. In addition to his performing career, Levionnois is also a dedicated teacher. He has taught masterclasses at many of the world's leading music schools, including the Juilliard School, the Royal Academy of Music in London, and the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris. He is currently a professor of cello at the Haute École de Musique de Genève in Switzerland. Levionnois continues to perform regularly around the world, both as a soloist and as a chamber musician. He is known for his commitment to bringing classical music to new audiences and for his dedication to promoting the work of contemporary composers. He is widely regarded as one of the most exciting and talented cellists of his generation, and his career shows no signs of slowing down.
