The Novosibirsk Symphony Orchestra is a classical music ensemble based in Novosibirsk, Russia. The orchestra was founded in 1956 by Arnold Kats, a renowned conductor and composer. Kats was a graduate of the Moscow Conservatory and had previously conducted the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra. He was invited to Novosibirsk to establish a new orchestra and music school, which would become the Novosibirsk State Conservatory. The Novosibirsk Symphony Orchestra began with just 60 musicians, but quickly grew in size and reputation. Kats was a demanding conductor, and he pushed his musicians to achieve the highest standards of performance. Under his leadership, the orchestra became known for its precision, clarity, and expressive power. Over the years, the Novosibirsk Symphony Orchestra has performed a wide range of classical music, from the Baroque era to the present day. The orchestra has collaborated with many renowned soloists and conductors, including Mstislav Rostropovich, Vladimir Ashkenazy, and Valery Gergiev. One of the highlights of the Novosibirsk Symphony Orchestra's history was its performance at the 1986 Edinburgh International Festival. The orchestra was invited to perform as part of the festival's "Soviet Season," which featured some of the best classical music ensembles from the Soviet Union. The Novosibirsk Symphony Orchestra's performance was a huge success, and it received rave reviews from critics and audiences alike. In addition to its international performances, the Novosibirsk Symphony Orchestra has also been recognized for its contributions to Russian culture. In 2006, the orchestra was awarded the Order of Friendship by the Russian government, in recognition of its outstanding achievements in the field of music. The Novosibirsk Symphony Orchestra has had many talented musicians over the years, but some of its most notable members include the violinist Vadim Repin and the pianist Nikolai Lugansky. Repin joined the orchestra as a child prodigy in the 1980s, and he quickly became one of its most celebrated soloists. He has since gone on to perform with many of the world's leading orchestras and conductors, and he has won numerous awards for his performances and recordings. Lugansky, meanwhile, joined the Novosibirsk Symphony Orchestra as a young pianist in the 1990s. He quickly established himself as one of the orchestra's most talented musicians, and he has since become one of the world's leading pianists. Lugansky has won numerous awards for his recordings, including the Diapason d'Or and the Echo Klassik Award. Today, the Novosibirsk Symphony Orchestra continues to be one of Russia's leading classical music ensembles. It is led by the conductor Thomas Sanderling, who took over as music director in 2010. Sanderling is the son of the renowned conductor Kurt Sanderling, and he has conducted many of the world's leading orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic and the London Symphony Orchestra. Under Sanderling's leadership, the Novosibirsk Symphony Orchestra has continued to push the boundaries of classical music. The orchestra has performed many new works by contemporary composers, and it has collaborated with artists from a wide range of musical genres. Despite its many achievements, however, the Novosibirsk Symphony Orchestra remains committed to its founding principles of precision, clarity, and expressive power.
