Born on May 22, 1963, in Copenhagen, Denmark, Christensen showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of six. He went on to study at the Royal Danish Academy of Music in Copenhagen, where he received a degree in piano performance. After completing his studies, Christensen began his career as a pianist, performing in concerts and recitals throughout Denmark and Europe. He quickly gained a reputation for his virtuosic playing and his ability to interpret a wide range of musical styles. He was appointed as the principal conductor of the Aarhus Symphony Orchestra in 1993, a position he held for five years. During his tenure with the orchestra, Christensen led the ensemble in a wide range of repertoire, from classical works by Mozart and Beethoven to contemporary pieces by living composers. In 1998, Christensen was appointed as the principal conductor of the Danish National Symphony Orchestra, one of Denmark's most prestigious orchestras. He held this position for ten years, during which time he led the orchestra in numerous performances and recordings. Some of the highlights of his tenure with the Danish National Symphony Orchestra include a performance of Mahler's Symphony No. 2, which was broadcast live on Danish television and received widespread critical acclaim. In addition to his work with the Danish National Symphony Orchestra, Christensen has also conducted many other orchestras around the world, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the New York Philharmonic. He has also collaborated with many of the world's leading soloists, including Yo-Yo Ma, Anne-Sophie Mutter, and Lang Lang. Throughout his career, Christensen has received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to classical music. In 2002, he was awarded the Order of the Dannebrog, one of Denmark's highest honors, for his services to music. He has also been awarded the Carl Nielsen Prize, the Danish Music Critics' Prize, and the Nordic Council Music Prize. In addition to his work as a conductor and pianist, Christensen has also continued to compose his own music. His compositions have been performed by many leading orchestras and ensembles around the world, and he has received commissions from a wide range of organizations, including the Royal Danish Ballet and the Danish National Symphony Orchestra.
