Born on 9th May 1939 in Liverpool, England, she grew up in a family that was passionate about music. Her father was a professional musician, and her mother was a music teacher. From a young age, Gillian showed a keen interest in music and began taking piano lessons at the age of six. Gillian's talent for singing was discovered when she was a teenager. She joined the Liverpool Philharmonic Youth Choir and quickly rose through the ranks to become a soloist. Her exceptional voice and stage presence caught the attention of many, and she was soon offered a scholarship to study at the Royal Academy of Music in London. At the Royal Academy of Music, Gillian honed her skills under the tutelage of renowned vocal coaches and opera singers. She graduated with honors and began her professional career as a mezzo-soprano. Her first major performance was in 1962 when she sang the role of Cherubino in Mozart's "The Marriage of Figaro" at the Glyndebourne Festival Opera. Her performance was widely acclaimed, and she was hailed as a rising star in the world of opera. Over the next few years, Gillian performed in several operas and concerts across the UK and Europe. She became a regular performer at the Royal Opera House in London and the English National Opera. Her performances in "Carmen," "The Barber of Seville," and "Don Giovanni" were particularly noteworthy and earned her critical acclaim. In 1973, Gillian was invited to perform at the prestigious Salzburg Festival in Austria. She sang the role of Dorabella in Mozart's "Così fan tutte" and received a standing ovation from the audience. Her performance was so impressive that she was invited back to the festival for several more years. Gillian's international career took off in the 1980s when she began performing in the United States and Canada. She made her debut at the Metropolitan Opera in New York in 1982, singing the role of Rosina in "The Barber of Seville." Her performance was a huge success, and she was invited back to the Met for several more seasons. In addition to her opera performances, Gillian also became a sought-after concert singer. She performed in oratorios, recitals, and choral works across the world. Her performances in Handel's "Messiah" and Bach's "St. Matthew Passion" were particularly memorable.
