He grew up in a musical family, with his father playing the accordion and his mother singing in the local church choir. At the age of 18, Giacomini moved to Bologna to study singing at the Conservatorio Giovanni Battista Martini. He studied under the renowned Italian tenor, Carlo Bergonzi, and quickly gained a reputation as a promising young tenor. In 1966, he made his professional debut at the Teatro Comunale di Bologna, singing the role of Rodolfo in Puccini's La bohème. Giacomini's career took off in the 1970s, when he began performing in major opera houses around the world. He made his debut at La Scala in Milan in 1974, singing the role of Cavaradossi in Puccini's Tosca. He also performed at the Royal Opera House in London, the Metropolitan Opera in New York, and the Paris Opera. One of Giacomini's most memorable performances was in 1981, when he sang the role of Radames in Verdi's Aida at the Arena di Verona. The performance was broadcast on television and became one of the most-watched opera broadcasts in history.
