Das Philharmonische Orchester Dortmund, also known as the Dortmund Philharmonic Orchestra, is a classical music ensemble based in Dortmund, Germany. The orchestra was founded in 1887 as the "Städtisches Orchester Dortmund" and has since become one of the most renowned orchestras in Germany. The orchestra has had many notable conductors throughout its history, including Hermann Abendroth, Wilhelm Schüchter, and Marek Janowski. Currently, the orchestra is led by conductor Gabriel Feltz, who has been the General Music Director since 2013. The Dortmund Philharmonic Orchestra has a diverse repertoire, ranging from classical to contemporary music. The orchestra has performed works by composers such as Beethoven, Brahms, Mahler, and Strauss, as well as contemporary composers like John Adams and Arvo Pärt. One of the highlights of the orchestra's history was its performance at the 1958 World's Fair in Brussels, where it played for an audience of over 10,000 people. In 2011, the orchestra was awarded the Echo Klassik award for its recording of Mahler's Symphony No. 2.
