Timothy Ridout is a British violist who has quickly established himself as one of the most promising young musicians of his generation. Born in London in 1995, Ridout grew up in a musical family and began playing the viola at the age of six. He studied at the Purcell School of Music and later at the Royal Academy of Music in London, where he was a student of Martin Outram. Ridout's talent was evident from an early age, and he quickly began to make a name for himself in the classical music world. In 2016, he won first prize at the Lionel Tertis International Viola Competition, one of the most prestigious competitions for violists in the world. This was a major milestone in Ridout's career, and it helped to establish him as a rising star in the classical music world. Since then, Ridout has gone on to perform with some of the world's leading orchestras and conductors. He has appeared as a soloist with the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the BBC Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Philharmonia Orchestra, among others. He has also collaborated with conductors such as Vladimir Ashkenazy, Sir Mark Elder, and Sakari Oramo. One of the highlights of Ridout's career so far was his performance of the Walton Viola Concerto with the London Philharmonic Orchestra in 2018. This was a particularly special moment for Ridout, as the concerto was written for and premiered by Lionel Tertis, the same musician after whom the competition that Ridout won in 2016 is named. Ridout's performance was widely praised by critics, who noted his "rich, warm tone" and "impeccable technique." In addition to his work as a soloist, Ridout is also an active chamber musician. He is a member of the Chiaroscuro Quartet, a group that specializes in performing on period instruments. The quartet has received widespread acclaim for their performances, and they have been praised for their "exquisite playing" and "impeccable ensemble." Ridout's repertoire is wide-ranging, and he is known for his interpretations of both classical and contemporary music. He has premiered works by composers such as Mark-Anthony Turnage and Charlotte Bray, and he is particularly interested in exploring the possibilities of the viola as a solo instrument. Despite his young age, Ridout has already received numerous awards and accolades for his work. In addition to his win at the Lionel Tertis International Viola Competition, he has also been awarded the Royal Academy of Music's prestigious Queen's Commendation for Excellence and the Royal Philharmonic Society's Julius Isserlis Scholarship. Looking to the future, Ridout shows no signs of slowing down. He continues to perform regularly as a soloist and chamber musician, and he is committed to exploring new repertoire and pushing the boundaries of what is possible on the viola. With his talent, dedication, and passion for music, Timothy Ridout is sure to be a major force in the classical music world for years to come.
