Maria Teresa Garatti was born on October 22, 1949, in Milan, Italy. She was the daughter of a music-loving family, and her father was a pianist. Garatti began playing the piano at the age of four, and by the time she was six, she was already performing in public. Garatti's talent was recognized early on, and she was accepted into the prestigious Conservatorio Giuseppe Verdi in Milan at the age of nine. She studied under the guidance of renowned pianist Carlo Zecchi, who recognized her exceptional talent and encouraged her to pursue a career in music. Garatti's early performances were met with critical acclaim, and she quickly gained a reputation as one of the most promising young pianists of her generation. She won several awards and competitions, including the International Piano Competition in Geneva in 1966, and the Busoni Competition in Bolzano in 1967. In 1968, Garatti made her debut at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan, performing Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 21 in C major. The performance was a resounding success, and Garatti was hailed as a rising star in the classical music world. Over the next few years, Garatti continued to perform at major venues around the world, including the Royal Festival Hall in London, the Carnegie Hall in New York, and the Salle Pleyel in Paris. She also recorded several albums, including a critically acclaimed recording of Beethoven's Piano Sonatas. In 1973, Garatti suffered a serious injury to her right hand, which threatened to end her career. However, she refused to give up, and with the help of her doctors and physical therapists, she was able to regain her strength and continue performing. Garatti's perseverance paid off, and she went on to have a long and successful career as a pianist. She continued to perform and record well into her later years, and her legacy as one of the greatest pianists of her generation lives on. Throughout her career, Garatti received numerous awards and honors, including the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic, the highest honor that can be bestowed upon an Italian citizen. She was also awarded the prestigious Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli Prize in 2009, in recognition of her outstanding contributions to the world of classical music. Garatti passed away on December 31, 2017, at the age of 68. She will be remembered as a gifted pianist, a trailblazer for women in classical music, and a true inspiration to generations of musicians to come.
