Judith Cohen is a renowned classical music artist who has made significant contributions to the world of music. She was born on August 16, 1949, in Montreal, Canada. Her parents were both musicians, and they instilled in her a love for music from a young age. Cohen began playing the piano at the age of five and later learned to play the guitar and other instruments. Cohen attended McGill University in Montreal, where she earned a Bachelor of Music degree in 1971. She then went on to pursue a Master of Music degree at the University of Toronto, which she completed in 1973. During her studies, Cohen developed a deep appreciation for traditional music from around the world, particularly from Spain, Portugal, and the Middle East. After completing her studies, Cohen began performing as a solo artist and as part of various ensembles. She quickly gained a reputation for her virtuosic guitar playing and her ability to blend different musical styles. In 1976, Cohen released her first album, "Judith Cohen," which featured a mix of traditional and original compositions. Over the years, Cohen has performed at some of the world's most prestigious venues, including Carnegie Hall in New York City and the Royal Albert Hall in London. She has also collaborated with many other musicians, including the renowned Spanish guitarist Paco de Lucia. One of Cohen's most significant achievements was her role in the creation of the Sephardic Music Festival, which she co-founded in 2005. The festival celebrates the music and culture of the Sephardic Jews, who were expelled from Spain in the 15th century. Cohen's passion for Sephardic music has led her to travel extensively throughout Spain, Portugal, and North Africa, where she has collected and studied traditional songs and melodies. Cohen has received numerous awards and honors throughout her career. In 1998, she was awarded the prestigious Canada Council for the Arts' Jean A. Chalmers National Music Award for her contributions to Canadian music. In 2010, she was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal for her contributions to Canadian culture. In addition to her work as a performer, Cohen is also a respected musicologist and ethnomusicologist. She has published several books and articles on traditional music from around the world, including "The Sephardic Songbook" and "Cowboy Songs and Other Frontier Ballads." Cohen's dedication to preserving and promoting traditional music has made her a beloved figure in the world of classical music. Her unique blend of musical styles and her virtuosic guitar playing have inspired countless musicians and music lovers around the world. Today, Cohen continues to perform, record, and teach, sharing her love of music with audiences everywhere.
