His father was a pianist, and his mother was a violinist. From a young age, Shewan was exposed to classical music and began playing the piano at the age of four. Shewan's parents recognized his talent and enrolled him in the Royal Academy of Music in London when he was just six years old. He studied there for ten years, honing his skills as a pianist and composer. During this time, he also began to develop a love for orchestral music and began composing his own pieces. In 1976, Shewan graduated from the Royal Academy of Music with a degree in composition. He then went on to study at the Juilliard School in New York City, where he was mentored by renowned composer John Williams. It was during this time that Shewan began to gain recognition for his work, and his compositions were performed by orchestras around the world. One of Shewan's most notable works is his Symphony No. 1, which he composed in 1982. The piece was commissioned by the London Symphony Orchestra and was premiered at the Royal Albert Hall in London.
