He was the son of a famous Japanese composer, Hisatada Inoue, who was a professor of music at the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music. Michiyoshi Inoue grew up in a musical family and was exposed to classical music from a very young age. He started playing the piano at the age of four and later learned to play the violin and the viola. Inoue attended the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music, where he studied conducting under the tutelage of Hideo Saito, one of Japan's most prominent conductors. Inoue was a talented student and quickly gained recognition for his exceptional musical abilities. He graduated from the university in 1972 and went on to study at the Hochschule für Musik in Vienna, Austria, where he continued to hone his skills as a conductor. In 1974, Inoue returned to Japan and began his career as a conductor. He quickly gained a reputation as one of Japan's most promising young conductors and was appointed as the music director of the Kyoto Symphony Orchestra in 1978.
