He was the son of a music teacher and grew up in a family that was passionate about music. From a young age, Samo showed a keen interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of six. Samo's parents recognized his talent and encouraged him to pursue a career in music. He began his formal music education at the Ljubljana Conservatory, where he studied piano and composition. After completing his studies, Samo continued his education at the Academy of Music in Zagreb, Croatia, where he studied under the renowned pianist and composer, Bruno Seidlhofer. In 1952, Samo made his debut as a concert pianist, performing with the Slovenian Philharmonic Orchestra. The performance was a huge success, and Samo quickly gained a reputation as one of the most talented pianists in Slovenia. He went on to perform with many other orchestras throughout Europe, including the Vienna Philharmonic, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the London Symphony Orchestra. Throughout his career, Samo was known for his technical skill and his ability to bring out the emotional depth of the music he played. He was particularly renowned for his interpretations of the works of Mozart, Beethoven, and Chopin. His performances were always highly anticipated, and he was often invited to perform at major music festivals around the world. In addition to his career as a concert pianist, Samo was also a respected composer. He wrote a number of works for piano, as well as chamber music and orchestral pieces. His compositions were often inspired by the folk music of Slovenia and other parts of Eastern Europe. Samo's career was marked by many highlights and achievements. In 1960, he won first prize at the International Piano Competition in Geneva, Switzerland. This was a major accomplishment, and it helped to establish him as one of the leading pianists of his generation. Over the years, Samo received many other awards and honors for his contributions to classical music. In 1978, he was awarded the Prešeren Award, Slovenia's highest cultural honor. He was also made an honorary member of the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts. Despite his many accomplishments, Samo remained humble and dedicated to his craft. He continued to perform and compose music well into his later years, and he was always eager to share his knowledge and experience with younger musicians. Samo Hubad passed away on December 28, 2018, at the age of 90.
