Soustrot grew up in a musical family, and his father was a trumpet player. He started playing the trumpet at a young age and showed exceptional talent. Soustrot received his formal music education at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris, where he studied under Maurice André, one of the most famous trumpet players of the 20th century. Soustrot's career as a professional musician began in the early 1970s when he joined the Orchestre National de France as a solo trumpet player. He quickly gained recognition for his exceptional talent and was soon invited to perform with some of the most prestigious orchestras in Europe, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the Vienna Philharmonic. In addition to his work as a trumpet player, Soustrot also developed a passion for conducting. He studied conducting with Sergiu Celibidache and Pierre Boulez and made his debut as a conductor in 1983 with the Orchestre National de France. Soustrot's conducting career quickly took off, and he was soon invited to conduct some of the most famous orchestras in the world, including the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra. One of Soustrot's most significant achievements as a conductor was his appointment as the principal conductor of the Orchestre Philharmonique de Nice in 1990. He held this position for 15 years and helped to establish the orchestra as one of the leading orchestras in France. During his tenure, Soustrot conducted numerous concerts and recordings with the orchestra, including performances of works by Beethoven, Brahms, and Mahler. Soustrot's career as a trumpet player also continued to flourish during this time. He recorded numerous albums as a soloist and collaborated with some of the most famous musicians of his time, including pianist Martha Argerich and cellist Yo-Yo Ma. Soustrot's recordings received critical acclaim and won several awards, including the Grand Prix du Disque and the Diapason d'Or. In addition to his work as a conductor and trumpet player, Soustrot was also a dedicated music educator. He taught at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris and the Conservatoire National de Région de Nice and mentored many young musicians who went on to have successful careers in music. Throughout his career, Soustrot received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to classical music. In 1999, he was awarded the Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French government in recognition of his outstanding achievements in the arts. In 2006, he was awarded the Médaille d'Or de la Ville de Nice, the highest honor given by the city of Nice, for his contributions to the cultural life of the city.
