Born on August 22, 1931, in Leipzig, Germany, Stöckigt was the son of a music teacher and grew up in a family that was passionate about music. His father, who was a violinist, introduced him to music at a young age, and he began playing the piano when he was just five years old. Stöckigt's talent for music was evident from an early age, and he quickly became a prodigy. He received his first piano lessons from his father and later studied at the Leipzig Conservatory. He also received private lessons from renowned pianists such as Walter Gieseking and Edwin Fischer. In 1950, Stöckigt made his debut as a soloist with the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, performing Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 3. This performance marked the beginning of his illustrious career as a pianist. He went on to perform with many other orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the Vienna Philharmonic, and the New York Philharmonic. Stöckigt was known for his exceptional technique and his ability to bring out the emotional depth of the music he played. He was particularly renowned for his interpretations of the works of Bach, Beethoven, and Schumann. He was also a champion of contemporary music and premiered works by composers such as György Ligeti and Karlheinz Stockhausen. Throughout his career, Stöckigt received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to music. In 1956, he won first prize at the International Piano Competition in Geneva, Switzerland. He was also awarded the National Prize of East Germany in 1963 and the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany in 1991. One of the highlights of Stöckigt's career was his performance of Bach's Goldberg Variations at the Leipzig Bach Festival in 1984. This performance was recorded and released on CD, and it remains one of the definitive recordings of this work. Stöckigt was also a respected teacher and taught at the Leipzig Conservatory from 1963 to 1996. Many of his students went on to have successful careers as pianists and music educators.
