The NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchester is a classical music ensemble based in Hamburg, Germany. The orchestra was founded in 1945 as the Northwest German Radio Symphony Orchestra (NWDR Symphony Orchestra) and has since undergone several name changes. In 2016, the orchestra was renamed the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchester after the opening of the Elbphilharmonie concert hall in Hamburg. The orchestra has had several notable conductors throughout its history, including Hans Schmidt-Isserstedt, Günter Wand, Christoph Eschenbach, and Thomas Hengelbrock. The current chief conductor is Alan Gilbert, who took over the position in 2019. The NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchester has performed at major concert halls and festivals around the world, including the Salzburg Festival, the BBC Proms, and the Lucerne Festival. The orchestra has also collaborated with many renowned soloists, including Martha Argerich, Lang Lang, and Anne-Sophie Mutter. One of the highlights of the orchestra's history was its performance at the reopening of the Berlin State Opera in 1955, which was attended by many prominent figures, including German Chancellor Konrad Adenauer. The orchestra has also received numerous awards and accolades throughout its history, including the Echo Klassik Award and the German Record Critics' Award. In recent years, the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchester has become known for its innovative programming and collaborations with contemporary composers. In 2018, the orchestra premiered a new work by composer and conductor Matthias Pintscher, which was commissioned by the Elbphilharmonie concert hall.
