Genre:VocalRobert Kortgaard is a Canadian classical pianist who has established himself as one of the most versatile and sought-after musicians of his generation. Born in Regina, Saskatchewan in 1955, Kortgaard began playing the piano at the age of four and showed an early aptitude for the instrument. He went on to study at the University of Toronto and the Juilliard School in New York City, where he received his Bachelor of Music and Master of Music degrees, respectively. Kortgaard's career as a professional musician began in the early 1980s, when he started performing as a soloist and chamber musician in Canada and the United States. He quickly gained a reputation for his virtuosic playing and his ability to connect with audiences through his expressive and communicative performances. Over the years, Kortgaard has collaborated with many of the world's leading musicians, including cellist Yo-Yo Ma, soprano Measha Brueggergosman, and violinist Joshua Bell. One of the highlights of Kortgaard's career was his appointment as the Artistic Director of the Indian River Festival in Prince Edward Island, Canada, a position he held from 1996 to 2012. During his tenure, Kortgaard helped to transform the festival into one of the most prestigious and successful classical music events in Canada, attracting top-tier performers from around the world and showcasing the best of Canadian talent. Kortgaard has also been recognized for his contributions to the arts with numerous awards and honors. In 1999, he was awarded the Order of Canada, one of the country's highest civilian honors, for his "outstanding contributions to the arts as a pianist and artistic director." He has also received the Queen's Golden Jubilee Medal, the Saskatchewan Order of Merit, and the Diamond Jubilee Medal, among other accolades. In addition to his work as a performer and artistic director, Kortgaard is also a prolific recording artist. He has released over 20 albums, including solo recordings, chamber music collaborations, and recordings with orchestras. His recordings have received critical acclaim and have been nominated for several Juno Awards, Canada's top music awards. Some of Kortgaard's most notable performances include his appearances with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, the National Arts Centre Orchestra, and the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. He has also performed at major music festivals around the world, including the Edinburgh International Festival, the Hong Kong Arts Festival, and the Ravinia Festival in Chicago.
