Born on March 14, 1928, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Brusilow showed an early interest in music and began playing the violin at the age of five. He was a child prodigy and gave his first public performance at the age of seven. Brusilow's parents recognized his talent and encouraged him to pursue a career in music. He studied at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, where he received his Bachelor of Music degree in 1948. He continued his studies at the Juilliard School in New York City, where he earned his Master of Music degree in 1950. After completing his studies, Brusilow began his career as a violinist, performing with various orchestras and ensembles. He was a member of the Cleveland Orchestra from 1955 to 1959 and served as concertmaster of the Philadelphia Orchestra from 1959 to 1966. During this time, he also performed as a soloist with many orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. In addition to his work as a violinist, Brusilow was also a talented conductor. He served as the music director of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra from 1970 to 1973 and the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra from 1975 to 1982. He also conducted many other orchestras, including the Philadelphia Orchestra, the New York Philharmonic, and the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Brusilow was known for his innovative programming and his commitment to contemporary music. He premiered many new works by composers such as Samuel Barber, Leonard Bernstein, and Aaron Copland. He also championed the music of American composers and was a strong advocate for the performance of music by women and minority composers. Throughout his career, Brusilow received many awards and honors for his contributions to the world of music. In 1963, he was awarded the Philadelphia Award, which recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to the city of Philadelphia. He was also awarded the Ditson Conductor's Award in 1978, which recognizes conductors who have made significant contributions to American music. In addition to his work as a performer and conductor, Brusilow was also a dedicated educator. He served as the director of the orchestral studies program at Southern Methodist University in Dallas from 1973 to 1982 and as the dean of the Meadows School of the Arts at SMU from 1982 to 1990. He also taught at the University of North Texas and the University of Pennsylvania. Brusilow was a beloved figure in the world of classical music, known for his passion, dedication, and talent.
