He later continued his studies in conducting with Arturo Toscanini, one of the most celebrated conductors of the 20th century. Toscanini recognized Ghione's talent and took him under his wing, providing him with valuable guidance and mentorship. Ghione made his conducting debut in 1931, leading the Orchestra Sinfonica di Torino in a performance of Beethoven's Symphony No. 5. He quickly gained a reputation as a talented conductor and was appointed as the principal conductor of the Orchestra Sinfonica di Torino in 1934. He held this position for several years, during which time he conducted a wide range of repertoire, from classical to contemporary works. In 1940, Ghione made his debut at La Scala in Milan, one of the most prestigious opera houses in the world. He conducted a performance of Verdi's Aida, which was a great success and marked the beginning of his long association with the opera house. Over the years, Ghione conducted many performances at La Scala, including works by Verdi, Puccini, and Mozart. Ghione's international career began in the 1950s when he was invited to conduct the London Philharmonic Orchestra. He also conducted the New York Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, among others. He was known for his precise and expressive conducting style, which brought out the best in the orchestras he worked with. One of Ghione's most significant achievements was his work with the Teatro Regio in Turin. He was appointed as the principal conductor of the opera house in 1958 and held the position for over a decade. During this time, he conducted many acclaimed productions, including Verdi's Otello and Puccini's La Bohème. He also worked with some of the most celebrated singers of the time, including Maria Callas and Renata Tebaldi. Ghione was also a respected pianist and often performed as a soloist and chamber musician. He recorded several albums of piano music, including works by Chopin, Beethoven, and Schumann.
