Artist Info
Fernando Guimarães is a renowned classical music artist known for his exceptional vocal abilities and his passion for early music. Born in Porto, Portugal, in 1979, Guimarães grew up in a family of musicians and was exposed to music from a very young age. His father was a choir conductor, and his mother was a pianist, which meant that music was an integral part of his upbringing. Guimarães began his musical training at the age of six, learning to play the piano and the violin. However, it was his voice that stood out, and he soon began to focus on singing. He joined the choir of his local church and began to perform in concerts and recitals. His talent was evident from an early age, and he quickly gained a reputation as a gifted singer. After completing his secondary education, Guimarães enrolled at the Escola Superior de Música e Artes do Espetáculo in Porto, where he studied singing under the guidance of renowned vocal coach António Salgado. He also studied with other notable teachers, including Jill Feldman, Richard Levitt, and Peter Kooij. Guimarães' career as a professional singer began in 2002 when he joined the Portuguese vocal ensemble Cupertinos. The group specialized in early music, and Guimarães' voice was a perfect fit for their repertoire. He quickly became one of the ensemble's leading soloists, and his performances were praised for their clarity, precision, and emotional depth. In 2005, Guimarães made his debut as a soloist, performing in a production of Monteverdi's L'Orfeo at the Teatro Nacional de São Carlos in Lisbon. The performance was a critical and commercial success, and Guimarães' star began to rise. He went on to perform in numerous productions of early music, including works by Bach, Handel, and Vivaldi. One of Guimarães' most notable performances was in the 2010 production of Handel's Messiah at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. The performance was conducted by Ton Koopman, and Guimarães' rendition of the aria "Comfort ye, my people" was particularly praised for its beauty and sensitivity. Guimarães has also performed with some of the world's leading orchestras and ensembles, including the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, the Academy of Ancient Music, and Les Arts Florissants. He has worked with many of the leading conductors in the field of early music, including William Christie, Paul McCreesh, and Jordi Savall. In addition to his work as a performer, Guimarães is also a respected teacher and vocal coach. He has taught at the Escola Superior de Música e Artes do Espetáculo in Porto and has given masterclasses and workshops around the world. Guimarães' talent and dedication have been recognized with numerous awards and honors. In 2008, he was awarded the prestigious Prémio Jovens Músicos, which recognizes outstanding young musicians in Portugal. He has also been awarded the Medalha de Mérito Cultural by the Portuguese government for his contributions to the arts. Despite his success, Guimarães remains humble and dedicated to his craft. He continues to perform and teach, always striving to improve and to share his love of music with others. His passion for early music and his exceptional vocal abilities have made him one of the most respected and admired classical music artists of his generation.More....
