He was a prodigious student, and by the age of ten, he had already given his first public performance. His talent was recognized by many, and he was soon invited to perform at various concerts and events. In 1917, the Russian Revolution broke out, and Mednikoff's family was forced to flee the country. He studied under some of the most renowned pianists of the time, including Alfred Cortot and Isidor Philipp. He also studied composition under Nadia Boulanger, who recognized his talent and encouraged him to pursue a career as a composer.
