The Los Angeles Philharmonic New Music Group is a renowned classical music ensemble that has been at the forefront of contemporary music for over three decades. Founded in 1981 by the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra, the New Music Group was created to showcase the works of living composers and to promote the development of new music. The ensemble is made up of some of the most talented musicians in the world, including members of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra, as well as guest performers from around the globe. The New Music Group is led by its artistic director, John Adams, a Pulitzer Prize-winning composer who has been with the ensemble since its inception. Over the years, the New Music Group has performed countless world premieres and commissioned works from some of the most innovative and influential composers of our time. The ensemble has also collaborated with a wide range of artists, including dancers, visual artists, and filmmakers, to create groundbreaking multimedia performances. One of the New Music Group's most notable performances was the world premiere of John Adams' "Nixon in China" in 1987. The opera, which tells the story of President Richard Nixon's historic visit to China in 1972, was a critical and commercial success, and has since become a staple of the modern opera repertoire. In addition to its performances, the New Music Group has also been recognized for its contributions to contemporary music. The ensemble has received numerous awards and honors, including a Grammy Award for Best Classical Contemporary Composition for John Adams' "On the Transmigration of Souls" in 2005. The New Music Group has also been instrumental in promoting music education and outreach programs in the Los Angeles area.
