Role:ConductorBirth:in TaiwanMei-Ann Chen is a Taiwanese-American conductor who has made a name for herself in the classical music world. Born on August 18, 1973, in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, Chen grew up in a family of musicians. Her father was a violinist and her mother was a pianist, so it was only natural that Chen would develop a love for music at a young age. Chen began playing the piano when she was just four years old and started studying the violin when she was six. She showed a natural talent for music and quickly became a skilled musician. However, it wasn't until she was in high school that she discovered her true passion for conducting. Chen attended the National Taiwan Normal University, where she earned a Bachelor of Music degree in violin performance. She then went on to study conducting at the University of Michigan, where she earned a Master of Music degree. After completing her studies, Chen began her career as a conductor, working with various orchestras and ensembles around the world. One of Chen's early highlights as a conductor came in 2002 when she won the Malko Competition for Young Conductors in Denmark. This prestigious competition is held every three years and attracts some of the most talented young conductors from around the world. Chen's victory was a major accomplishment and helped to launch her career as a conductor. Over the years, Chen has conducted many of the world's top orchestras, including the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and the London Philharmonic Orchestra. She has also served as the music director of several orchestras, including the Memphis Symphony Orchestra and the Chicago Sinfonietta. One of Chen's most notable accomplishments as a conductor came in 2011 when she was named the music director of the Chicago Sinfonietta. This was a historic appointment, as Chen became the first woman and the first person of Asian descent to lead a major orchestra in the United States. During her tenure with the Chicago Sinfonietta, Chen helped to expand the orchestra's repertoire and reach new audiences. Chen has also been recognized for her work as a conductor, receiving numerous awards and honors over the years. In 2009, she was named one of Musical America's Top 30 Professionals of the Year, and in 2014, she was awarded the Helen M. Thompson Award by the League of American Orchestras. This award is given to conductors who have made a significant impact on the field of classical music. In addition to her work as a conductor, Chen is also a passionate advocate for music education. She has worked with numerous youth orchestras and has served as a guest conductor for several educational programs. Chen believes that music education is essential for young people and that it can help to foster creativity, discipline, and a love for the arts. Overall, Mei-Ann Chen is a talented and accomplished conductor who has made a significant impact on the world of classical music.
