Born in 1955 in New York City, Kiesler grew up in a family of musicians and was exposed to classical music from a young age. His father was a violinist and his mother was a pianist, and they encouraged him to pursue music as a career. Kiesler began his musical training as a pianist, but soon switched to the cello. He studied at the Juilliard School and the Manhattan School of Music, where he earned his Bachelor's and Master's degrees in cello performance. During this time, he also began conducting and was mentored by conductors such as Leonard Bernstein and Seiji Ozawa. In 1980, Kiesler was appointed as the music director of the Illinois Symphony Orchestra, a position he held for six years. During his tenure, he transformed the orchestra into a world-class ensemble and received critical acclaim for his innovative programming and dynamic performances. In 1986, Kiesler was appointed as the music director of the Spokane Symphony Orchestra in Washington state. He held this position for ten years and again received widespread praise for his leadership and artistic vision.
