She was the daughter of a music teacher and grew up in a musical family. Her father was a conductor and her mother was a singer, which influenced her to pursue a career in music. Rothenberger began her musical training at the age of 16 at the Mannheim Conservatory. She studied under the guidance of Professor Georg Walter, who recognized her talent and encouraged her to pursue a career in opera. She made her debut in 1943 at the Mannheim National Theatre as the Queen of the Night in Mozart's "The Magic Flute." Rothenberger's career took off in the 1950s when she became a member of the Vienna State Opera. She quickly gained recognition for her performances in operas such as "The Marriage of Figaro," "Don Giovanni," and "The Magic Flute." Her voice was known for its clarity, agility, and beauty, which made her a favorite among audiences and critics alike. In 1955, Rothenberger made her debut at the Salzburg Festival in Austria, where she performed the role of Zerlina in Mozart's "Don Giovanni." Her performance was a huge success, and she became a regular performer at the festival for many years. She also performed at other major opera houses around the world, including the Metropolitan Opera in New York, the Royal Opera House in London, and the Paris Opera. Rothenberger was also known for her performances in operettas, which were popular in Germany and Austria. She starred in productions of "The Merry Widow," "Die Fledermaus," and "The Gypsy Baron," among others. Her performances in these operettas were praised for their charm, wit, and humor. Rothenberger was a versatile performer who also excelled in concert performances.
