He was born on June 16, 1909, in Vienna, Austria, into a family of musicians. His father, Johann Boskovsky, was a violinist in the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, and his mother, Marie, was a pianist. Boskovsky began playing the violin at a young age and showed exceptional talent. He studied at the Vienna Music Academy under the guidance of Franz Samohyl, a renowned violinist and pedagogue. Boskovsky's early performances were well-received, and he quickly gained a reputation as a prodigious talent. In 1930, Boskovsky joined the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra as a violinist, following in his father's footsteps. He remained with the orchestra for over 40 years, eventually becoming its concertmaster in 1955. During his tenure with the Vienna Philharmonic, Boskovsky also performed as a soloist and chamber musician, collaborating with some of the most prominent musicians of his time. Boskovsky's career as a conductor began in the 1950s, when he was invited to lead the Vienna Philharmonic's New Year's Day Concert, a tradition that continues to this day. Boskovsky's interpretations of Viennese waltzes and operettas were highly acclaimed, and he became known as the "King of the Waltz." In addition to his work with the Vienna Philharmonic, Boskovsky also conducted other orchestras around the world, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the New York Philharmonic. He was also a prolific recording artist, with over 200 recordings to his name. Boskovsky's contributions to classical music were recognized with numerous awards and honors. In 1969, he was awarded the Austrian Cross of Honor for Science and Art, and in 1979, he was made an honorary citizen of Vienna. He was also awarded the Grand Decoration of Honor in Gold for Services to the Republic of Austria in 1984. Boskovsky continued to perform and conduct well into his 80s, and he remained an active member of the Vienna Philharmonic until his death on April 21, 1991. His legacy as a musician and conductor continues to inspire generations of classical music lovers around the world.More....
