Artist Info
The Orchestre Philharmonique Royal de Liège (OPRL) is a classical music ensemble based in Liège, Belgium. Founded in 1960, the orchestra has become one of the most renowned in Europe, with a rich history of performances and awards. The OPRL was founded by Fernand Quinet, a Belgian conductor and composer. Quinet had previously served as the conductor of the Liège Symphony Orchestra, but he left that position in 1959 to form a new ensemble. The OPRL was established with the support of the city of Liège and the Belgian government, and it quickly gained a reputation for excellence. Over the years, the OPRL has had many notable members, including conductors Pierre Bartholomée, Louis Langrée, and Christian Arming. The orchestra has also featured many talented soloists, including pianist Martha Argerich, cellist Yo-Yo Ma, and violinist Joshua Bell. One of the highlights of the OPRL's history was its performance at the 1958 World's Fair in Brussels. The orchestra played a program of Belgian music, including works by César Franck and Eugène Ysaÿe, to great acclaim. This performance helped to establish the OPRL as a major force in classical music. In the years since its founding, the OPRL has continued to perform at the highest level. The orchestra has toured extensively throughout Europe and Asia, and it has collaborated with many of the world's leading conductors and soloists. The OPRL has also recorded numerous albums, including a critically acclaimed series of recordings of the music of Belgian composer André Grétry. The OPRL has received many awards and honors over the years. In 2001, the orchestra was awarded the title of "Royal" by King Albert II of Belgium, in recognition of its contributions to Belgian culture. The OPRL has also been awarded the Prix Caecilia, Belgium's highest musical honor, on several occasions. One of the most memorable performances in the OPRL's history took place in 2013, when the orchestra played a concert in the ruins of the ancient city of Palmyra, Syria. The concert was organized as a tribute to the victims of the Syrian civil war, and it was attended by a small audience of local residents and international journalists. The performance was widely praised for its beauty and its message of hope in the midst of conflict. Today, the OPRL continues to be one of the most respected and admired orchestras in Europe. The ensemble's commitment to excellence and its dedication to promoting Belgian culture have made it a beloved institution in its home country and beyond. With a rich history and a bright future, the Orchestre Philharmonique Royal de Liège is sure to continue delighting audiences for many years to come.More....
