Born on November 6, 1976, in Wales, Watkins grew up in a family of musicians. His father, Derek Watkins, was a trumpet player, and his mother, Eira Wyn Jones, was a harpist. His sister, Hannah Watkins, is also a harpist. Watkins began playing the piano at a young age and showed a natural talent for music. He attended Chetham's School of Music in Manchester, where he studied piano with Peter Lawson and composition with Anthony Gilbert. He later went on to study at the Royal College of Music in London, where he studied piano with Peter Wallfisch and composition with Julian Anderson. As a composer, Watkins has written works for a variety of ensembles, including orchestras, chamber groups, and solo instruments.
