Born on March 6, 1946, in Medford, Massachusetts, Hoeprich grew up in a family of musicians. His father was a professional trumpet player, and his mother was a pianist. As a child, Hoeprich was exposed to a wide range of music genres, including jazz, classical, and folk music. Hoeprich began playing the clarinet at the age of 10 and quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument. He studied with several renowned clarinetists, including Robert Marcellus and Kalmen Opperman. In 1964, Hoeprich enrolled at the Juilliard School in New York City, where he studied with Joseph Allard and Robert Bloom. After completing his studies at Juilliard, Hoeprich began his professional career as a clarinetist. He played with several orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment. In 1981, Hoeprich joined the faculty of the Amsterdam Conservatory, where he taught clarinet and historical performance practice. He also became a member of the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra, led by the renowned conductor and harpsichordist Ton Koopman. With the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra, Hoeprich performed and recorded a wide range of Baroque and Classical music, including works by Bach, Handel, and Mozart. In addition to his work with the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra, Hoeprich has also performed and recorded with several other early music ensembles, including the Academy of Ancient Music, the English Concert, and the Orchestra of the Eighteenth Century. He has also collaborated with many of the world's leading conductors, including John Eliot Gardiner, Christopher Hogwood, and Philippe Herreweghe. Hoeprich's contributions to the world of classical music extend beyond his work as a performer. He is also a respected musicologist and has written extensively on the history of the clarinet and the development of clarinet music. In 2008, he published a book titled "The Clarinet," which is considered one of the most comprehensive studies of the instrument. Throughout his career, Hoeprich has received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to the world of classical music. In 1995, he was awarded the prestigious Dutch Music Prize, which is the highest honor given to a musician in the Netherlands. He has also been awarded the Edison Classical Music Award, the Diapason d'Or, and the Gramophone Award. In addition to his work as a performer and musicologist, Hoeprich is also a dedicated teacher.
