Norman Hathaway was born on May 15, 1975, in London, England. He grew up in a family of musicians, with his father being a renowned pianist and his mother a violinist. From a young age, Hathaway showed a keen interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of four. Hathaway's parents recognized his talent and encouraged him to pursue a career in music. He began taking formal piano lessons at the age of six and quickly progressed, winning his first competition at the age of eight. By the time he was a teenager, Hathaway had already performed in several prestigious venues across Europe, including the Royal Albert Hall in London and the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. In 1993, Hathaway was accepted into the Royal Academy of Music in London, where he studied under the tutelage of renowned pianist and teacher, Maria João Pires. During his time at the academy, Hathaway honed his skills and developed a deep understanding of classical music. He also began to experiment with different styles of music, incorporating elements of jazz and blues into his performances. After graduating from the academy in 1997, Hathaway embarked on a successful career as a concert pianist. He quickly gained a reputation for his technical prowess and his ability to bring a unique interpretation to classical works. He performed in some of the world's most prestigious concert halls, including Carnegie Hall in New York, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the Sydney Opera House. One of Hathaway's most memorable performances was at the 2002 Proms in London, where he performed Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 5 with the London Symphony Orchestra. The performance was hailed as a triumph, with critics praising Hathaway's "dazzling technique" and "sensitive interpretation." Hathaway's talent was recognized with numerous awards and accolades throughout his career. In 2004, he was awarded the prestigious International Classical Music Award for his recording of Chopin's complete Nocturnes. He was also a recipient of the Royal Philharmonic Society's Instrumentalist Award in 2006. Despite his success, Hathaway remained humble and dedicated to his craft. He continued to practice for hours every day, always striving to improve his technique and interpretation. He also remained committed to promoting classical music to a wider audience, often performing in schools and community centers. Tragically, Hathaway's career was cut short when he was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer in 2010. He underwent treatment and continued to perform when he was able, but his health deteriorated rapidly. He passed away on June 12, 2012, at the age of 37. Hathaway's legacy lives on through his recordings and the memories of those who were fortunate enough to see him perform. He will always be remembered as a brilliant pianist and a true ambassador for classical music.
