He was the son of a Baptist minister and grew up in a musical family. His father was a singer and his mother played the piano. From a young age, Heater showed a keen interest in music and began singing in his church choir. Heater received his formal music education at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, where he studied under the tutelage of the renowned vocal coach, Adeline McCall. He also studied with the famous tenor, Lauritz Melchior, who was impressed by Heater's talent and encouraged him to pursue a career in opera. In 1950, Heater made his professional debut as a tenor in the San Francisco Opera's production of "La Traviata." He quickly gained recognition for his powerful voice and dynamic stage presence. He went on to perform in several other productions with the San Francisco Opera, including "Madama Butterfly," "Carmen," and "The Barber of Seville." In 1952, Heater made his debut at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City, where he performed the role of Don José in "Carmen."
