The Drottningholm Court Theatre Orchestra is a classical music ensemble based in Stockholm, Sweden. The orchestra was founded in 1956 by the Swedish conductor and musicologist Arnold Östman, who was inspired by the historical performances of Baroque music at the Drottningholm Palace Theatre. The ensemble has since become renowned for its authentic performances of Baroque and Classical music, using period instruments and historically informed performance practices. The orchestra's main members include a core group of string players, as well as wind and brass players who are brought in for specific performances. The ensemble is led by concertmaster Nils-Erik Sparf, who is also a renowned Baroque violinist and has been a member of the orchestra since its founding. Other notable members include oboist Eric Hoeprich, who is known for his expertise in historical woodwind instruments, and horn player Andrew Clark, who has performed with many of the world's leading period instrument ensembles. One of the highlights of the Drottningholm Court Theatre Orchestra's career was its collaboration with the Swedish director Ingmar Bergman on his 1975 film version of Mozart's opera "The Magic Flute." The orchestra provided the music for the film, which was shot on location at the Drottningholm Palace Theatre and featured many of the same performers who had been involved in the orchestra's historical performances at the venue. The film was a critical and commercial success, and helped to raise the profile of the orchestra both in Sweden and internationally. Another notable performance by the Drottningholm Court Theatre Orchestra was its 2006 production of Handel's opera "Giulio Cesare," which was staged at the Drottningholm Palace Theatre and directed by the British director David McVicar. The production was praised for its innovative staging and the high quality of the music, and was later released on DVD by the Opus Arte label. The orchestra has also performed at many of the world's leading concert halls and festivals, including the BBC Proms, the Salzburg Festival, and the Lincoln Center in New York. In addition to its performances, the Drottningholm Court Theatre Orchestra has also received numerous awards and accolades for its recordings. The ensemble has recorded extensively for the BIS label, and has won several Gramophone Awards and other international prizes for its recordings of Baroque and Classical music. The orchestra's recordings of Mozart's "The Marriage of Figaro" and "Don Giovanni" with the conductor Arnold Östman are particularly highly regarded, and are considered to be among the finest recordings of these operas. Overall, the Drottningholm Court Theatre Orchestra has established itself as one of the world's leading period instrument ensembles, known for its authentic performances of Baroque and Classical music and its collaborations with leading directors and performers. The ensemble's commitment to historical performance practices and its dedication to bringing the music of the past to life for modern audiences have made it a beloved institution in the world of classical music.
