Sten Byriel was a renowned classical music artist who was born on August 22, 1939, in Copenhagen, Denmark. He was the son of a Danish father and a Swedish mother, and he grew up in a family that was passionate about music. Byriel's father was a professional musician who played the violin, and his mother was a singer. From a young age, Byriel was exposed to classical music and began to develop a love for it. Byriel began his formal music education at the Royal Danish Academy of Music in Copenhagen, where he studied singing. He was a talented student and quickly gained recognition for his exceptional voice. After completing his studies, Byriel began his professional career as a singer, performing in operas and concerts throughout Denmark. In 1967, Byriel made his debut at the Royal Danish Opera in Copenhagen, where he performed the role of Escamillo in Georges Bizet's opera Carmen. The performance was a huge success, and Byriel quickly became one of the most sought-after opera singers in Denmark. He went on to perform in many other operas, including Mozart's Don Giovanni, Verdi's Rigoletto, and Puccini's La Bohème. Byriel's talent as a singer was not limited to opera. He also had a successful career as a concert singer, performing in recitals and concerts throughout Europe. He was particularly known for his performances of the works of Danish composer Carl Nielsen, and he was often invited to perform at festivals and concerts celebrating Nielsen's music. Throughout his career, Byriel received many awards and honors for his contributions to classical music. In 1972, he was awarded the prestigious Tagea Brandt Rejselegat, a Danish award given to individuals who have made significant contributions to the arts. In 1989, he was awarded the Order of the Dannebrog, a Danish order of chivalry that is awarded to individuals who have made significant contributions to the country. One of the highlights of Byriel's career was his performance in the world premiere of the opera The Handmaid's Tale by Danish composer Poul Ruders. The opera, which is based on the novel by Margaret Atwood, premiered at the Royal Danish Opera in 2000, and Byriel played the role of the Commander. The performance was a huge success, and the opera went on to be performed in many other countries. Byriel continued to perform throughout his career, even after he retired from the Royal Danish Opera in 2004. He was a beloved figure in the world of classical music, and his contributions to the art form will be remembered for many years to come. Sadly, Sten Byriel passed away on December 31, 2019, at the age of 80.
