He was the son of a Danish father and a Swedish mother, and he grew up in a family that was passionate about music. One of the highlights of Byriel's career was his performance in the world premiere of the opera The Handmaid's Tale by Danish composer Poul Ruders. The opera, which is based on the novel by Margaret Atwood, premiered at the Royal Danish Opera in 2000, and Byriel played the role of the Commander. The performance was a huge success, and the opera went on to be performed in many other countries. Byriel continued to perform throughout his career, even after he retired from the Royal Danish Opera in 2004.
