Summit Brass is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 1985 by a group of brass players who were all members of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra. The founding members of the group were trumpet players David Hickman, Allan Dean, and Raymond Mase, horn player Kendall Betts, trombone player Joseph Alessi, and tuba player Sam Pilafian. The group's name, Summit Brass, was chosen to reflect the high level of musicianship and artistry that the members aspired to achieve. The ensemble quickly gained a reputation for its virtuosic performances and innovative programming, which often featured new works by contemporary composers alongside classic repertoire. Over the years, Summit Brass has undergone some changes in its membership, but the core group of players has remained largely the same. In addition to the founding members, other notable players who have been part of the ensemble include trumpet players Kevin Cobb and Michael Sachs, horn player William VerMeulen, trombone player Mark Lawrence, and tuba player Patrick Sheridan. One of the highlights of Summit Brass's career was its performance at the 1987 International Trumpet Guild Conference in Denver, Colorado. The group's program included works by Bach, Gabrieli, and Poulenc, as well as a new piece by composer Eric Ewazen. The performance was widely praised for its technical brilliance and musical sensitivity, and helped to establish Summit Brass as one of the premier brass ensembles in the world. In 1992, Summit Brass released its first album, "American Premieres," which featured works by American composers such as John Harbison, Joan Tower, and Gunther Schuller. The album was well-received by critics and helped to further establish the group's reputation as champions of new music. Over the years, Summit Brass has performed at many of the world's most prestigious concert halls and music festivals, including Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, and the Tanglewood Music Festival. The group has also collaborated with many of the world's leading orchestras and conductors, including the New York Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and Leonard Bernstein. In addition to its performances, Summit Brass has also been recognized for its contributions to the world of brass music through a number of awards and honors. In 1995, the group received the ASCAP Award for Adventurous Programming, which recognizes ensembles that demonstrate a commitment to performing new and innovative works. In 2000, Summit Brass was awarded the International Trumpet Guild's Award of Merit, which recognizes individuals and ensembles who have made significant contributions to the world of trumpet playing. Today, Summit Brass continues to be one of the most respected and admired brass ensembles in the world. The group's commitment to excellence and innovation has inspired countless musicians and audiences around the globe, and its legacy will continue to be felt for many years to come.
