The St. Petersburg State Academic Symphony Orchestra is a world-renowned classical music ensemble based in St. Petersburg, Russia. Founded in 1882, the orchestra has a rich history and has become one of the most respected and celebrated orchestras in the world. The orchestra was originally founded as the Court Orchestra of the Russian Empire, and was led by the famous conductor Eduard Nápravník. Over the years, the orchestra has undergone several name changes, including the Leningrad Philharmonic Orchestra and the St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra, before finally settling on its current name in 1991. Throughout its history, the St. Petersburg State Academic Symphony Orchestra has been known for its exceptional musicianship and its commitment to performing the works of Russian composers. The orchestra has premiered many important works by Russian composers, including Sergei Prokofiev's Symphony No. 1 and Dmitri Shostakovich's Symphony No. 7. One of the highlights of the orchestra's history was its performance of Shostakovich's Symphony No. 7 during the Siege of Leningrad in World War II. The orchestra performed the piece in the city's Philharmonic Hall, despite the fact that the city was under siege and many of the musicians were starving. The performance was broadcast over loudspeakers throughout the city, and is said to have lifted the spirits of the people of Leningrad during one of the darkest periods of the war. Over the years, the St. Petersburg State Academic Symphony Orchestra has performed with many of the world's greatest conductors and soloists. Some of the most notable conductors to have worked with the orchestra include Leonard Bernstein, Herbert von Karajan, and Valery Gergiev. The orchestra has also collaborated with many famous soloists, including pianists Martha Argerich and Lang Lang, and violinist Maxim Vengerov. In addition to its performances in St. Petersburg, the orchestra has toured extensively throughout the world. The orchestra has performed in many of the world's most prestigious concert halls, including Carnegie Hall in New York, the Royal Albert Hall in London, and the Musikverein in Vienna. The St. Petersburg State Academic Symphony Orchestra has received many awards and accolades over the years. In 2003, the orchestra was awarded the title of "Academic" by the Russian government, in recognition of its contributions to Russian culture. The orchestra has also won numerous international awards, including the Grand Prix at the International Festival of Orchestras in Paris in 1995. Today, the St. Petersburg State Academic Symphony Orchestra continues to be one of the world's most respected and celebrated classical music ensembles.
