Aureliano Pertile was an Italian tenor who was born on November 9, 1885, in Montagnana, a small town in the Veneto region of Italy. He was the son of a blacksmith and grew up in a family of modest means. Despite this, he showed an early interest in music and began singing in the local church choir at a young age. Pertile's talent was soon recognized, and he began studying music formally at the age of 16. He studied with several prominent teachers, including the famous Italian tenor, Fernando De Lucia. Pertile's hard work and dedication paid off, and he made his professional debut in 1908 at the Teatro Sociale in Rovigo, Italy. Over the next few years, Pertile performed in various opera houses throughout Italy, including the Teatro alla Scala in Milan and the Teatro San Carlo in Naples. He quickly gained a reputation as one of the most promising young tenors of his generation, and his career began to take off. In 1915, Pertile was drafted into the Italian army to fight in World War I. He served for three years and was wounded twice in battle. After the war, he resumed his singing career and continued to perform in Italy and other parts of Europe. Pertile's big break came in 1921 when he was invited to perform at the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires, Argentina. His performance was a huge success, and he quickly became a favorite of the Argentine public. He returned to Argentina several times over the next few years and became one of the most popular singers in the country. In 1923, Pertile made his debut at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City. He was an instant hit with audiences and critics alike, and he quickly became one of the most sought-after tenors in the world. He went on to perform at many of the world's most prestigious opera houses, including the Royal Opera House in London, the Paris Opera, and the Teatro alla Scala in Milan. Pertile was known for his powerful voice, his impeccable technique, and his ability to convey emotion through his singing. He was particularly renowned for his performances of Verdi's operas, and he was considered one of the greatest interpreters of the composer's work. Throughout his career, Pertile received many honors and awards. In 1926, he was awarded the title of "Cavaliere" by the Italian government in recognition of his contributions to the arts. He was also awarded the Order of the Crown of Italy and the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic. Pertile continued to perform well into his 60s, and he remained a beloved figure in the world of opera until his death in 1952. He left behind a legacy of great performances and recordings, and he is remembered as one of the greatest tenors of the 20th century.
