He was a self-taught musician who learned to play by listening to jazz records and practicing on his own. Verrell's career in music began in the 1940s when he joined the Royal Air Force (RAF) as a drummer. During his time in the RAF, he played in various bands and orchestras, which helped him develop his skills as a percussionist. After leaving the RAF, Verrell began working as a freelance musician and played with several jazz bands in London. In the 1950s, Verrell became a regular performer on the BBC radio show "Jazz Club" and gained national recognition for his drumming skills. He also played with some of the biggest names in jazz, including Benny Goodman, Louis Armstrong, and Duke Ellington. Verrell's reputation as a skilled drummer continued to grow, and he soon became a sought-after session musician. In the 1960s, Verrell began working with the BBC as a drummer for their television shows. He played on several popular programs, including "The Benny Hill Show," "The Morecambe and Wise Show," and "The Muppet Show." Verrell's drumming on "The Muppet Show" became particularly famous, and he was known for his energetic and entertaining performances. Verrell's work on "The Muppet Show" led to him being invited to perform with the Muppets on their 1977 world tour. He played drums for the Muppets in front of thousands of fans across the United States and Europe, and his performances were a highlight of the tour. In addition to his work with the Muppets, Verrell continued to work as a session musician and played on several film soundtracks, including "The Italian Job" and "The Pink Panther Strikes Again."
