Richard Margison is a renowned Canadian tenor who has made a significant contribution to the world of classical music. Born on January 24, 1957, in Victoria, British Columbia, Margison grew up in a musical family. His father was a church organist, and his mother was a choir director. Margison's love for music began at an early age, and he started singing in his church choir when he was just six years old. Margison's talent was evident from a young age, and he began taking voice lessons when he was a teenager. He went on to study at the University of British Columbia and the Banff Centre for the Arts. In 1984, he won the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions, which launched his career as an opera singer. Margison's career has been marked by numerous highlights, including performances at some of the world's most prestigious opera houses. He made his debut at the Metropolitan Opera in 1987, singing the role of the Duke of Mantua in Verdi's Rigoletto. He has since performed at the Met in numerous productions, including La Bohème, Tosca, and Otello. Margison has also performed at the Royal Opera House in London, the Paris Opera, the Vienna State Opera, and the Bavarian State Opera. He has worked with some of the world's most renowned conductors, including James Levine, Zubin Mehta, and Riccardo Muti. One of Margison's most memorable performances was his portrayal of the title role in Wagner's Parsifal at the Bayreuth Festival in 1998. The Bayreuth Festival is one of the most prestigious opera festivals in the world, and Margison's performance was widely praised by critics and audiences alike. Margison has also been recognized for his work outside of the opera world. In 1992, he performed at the closing ceremonies of the Winter Olympics in Albertville, France. He has also performed at numerous benefit concerts, including a concert for the victims of the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. Margison's talent has been recognized with numerous awards and honors. In 1993, he was awarded the Order of Canada, one of the country's highest honors. He has also been awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Golden Jubilee Medal and the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal. Margison has also been recognized for his work in promoting the arts in Canada. In 2001, he was appointed to the board of directors of the National Arts Centre in Ottawa. He has also served as the artistic director of the Elora Festival, a music festival in Ontario. In addition to his work as an opera singer, Margison has also recorded several albums of popular and classical music. His album, Songs of My Heart, was released in 2005 and features a mix of classical and popular songs. Margison's career has been marked by a dedication to his craft and a commitment to promoting the arts in Canada and around the world. His talent and hard work have made him one of the most respected and admired opera singers of his generation.
