Artist Info
Genre:ChoralAradia Ensemble is a Canadian classical music ensemble that was founded in 1994 by conductor and harpsichordist Kevin Mallon. The ensemble is known for its performances of Baroque and Classical music, and has gained critical acclaim for its historically informed performances. Kevin Mallon, who is originally from Dublin, Ireland, studied music at Trinity College Dublin and the Royal Irish Academy of Music. He later moved to Canada, where he became the conductor of the Toronto Chamber Orchestra. In 1994, he founded Aradia Ensemble with the goal of performing Baroque and Classical music on period instruments. The ensemble's name, Aradia, comes from a character in Italian folklore who is said to be a goddess of the moon and the hunt. Mallon chose the name because he felt it reflected the ensemble's commitment to exploring the music of the past while also bringing it to life for modern audiences. Aradia Ensemble's core members include Kevin Mallon on harpsichord and violin, violinists Cristina Zacharias and Edwin Huizinga, violist Patrick Jordan, cellist Margaret Gay, and bassist Alison Mackay. The ensemble also frequently collaborates with guest artists, including singers and instrumentalists. Over the years, Aradia Ensemble has performed at major venues and festivals in Canada and around the world. Some of the ensemble's most notable performances include a concert at the Royal Opera House in London, England, as part of the BBC Proms festival, and a performance at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. Aradia Ensemble has also released several recordings, including albums of music by Handel, Vivaldi, and Bach. The ensemble's recording of Handel's opera "Ariodante" was nominated for a Juno Award, which is Canada's top music award. In addition to its performances and recordings, Aradia Ensemble is also committed to education and outreach. The ensemble frequently gives workshops and masterclasses for young musicians, and has worked with schools and community organizations to bring classical music to a wider audience. Overall, Aradia Ensemble has established itself as one of Canada's leading classical music ensembles, known for its virtuosic performances and commitment to historical accuracy. With Kevin Mallon at the helm, the ensemble continues to explore the rich repertoire of Baroque and Classical music, bringing it to life for audiences around the world.More....
