In 1984, Salter was appointed as the leader of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, a position he held for over a decade. During his time with the orchestra, Salter played a key role in establishing its reputation as one of the finest orchestras in the world. He also collaborated with some of the most renowned conductors and soloists of his time, including Sir Simon Rattle, Andris Nelsons, and Nigel Kennedy. Salter's talent as a soloist was also widely recognized, and he performed with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and the BBC Symphony Orchestra. He also made several recordings as a soloist, including a critically acclaimed recording of the Elgar Violin Concerto with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. In addition to his work as a performer, Salter was also a respected teacher and mentor. He taught at the Royal Academy of Music and the Birmingham Conservatoire, where he inspired and nurtured the talents of many young musicians. Salter's contribution to the world of music was recognized with several awards and honors. In 1994, he was awarded the prestigious title of Fellow of the Royal Academy of Music, in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the music profession. He was also awarded the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 2001 for his services to music.
