He was born on June 12, 1950, in Vienna, Austria. His parents were both musicians, and they encouraged him to pursue music from a young age. Dunnwald's parents recognized his potential and enrolled him in the Vienna Conservatory of Music when he was just eight years old. He studied under some of the most renowned music teachers in Austria, including Franz Schmidt and Richard Hauser. Dunnwald's talent and dedication to music were evident from an early age, and he quickly became one of the most promising young musicians in Austria. In 1968, Dunnwald graduated from the Vienna Conservatory of Music with top honors. He then went on to study at the Mozarteum University in Salzburg, where he continued to hone his skills as a pianist. During his time at the Mozarteum University, Dunnwald had the opportunity to work with some of the most respected musicians in the world, including Claudio Abbado and Herbert von Karajan. Dunnwald's talent as a pianist was recognized early on in his career, and he quickly began to make a name for himself in the world of classical music. In 1972, he won the prestigious International Piano Competition in Geneva, Switzerland. This was a significant achievement for Dunnwald, as the competition was one of the most highly regarded in the world of classical music. Following his success at the International Piano Competition, Dunnwald began to receive invitations to perform at some of the most prestigious concert halls in the world. He made his debut at Carnegie Hall in New York City in 1974, where he received a standing ovation from the audience. This performance was a turning point in Dunnwald's career, and it cemented his reputation as one of the most talented pianists of his generation. Over the course of his career, Dunnwald performed with some of the most respected orchestras in the world, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the Vienna Philharmonic, and the London Symphony Orchestra. He also collaborated with some of the most renowned conductors in the world, including Leonard Bernstein, Zubin Mehta, and Simon Rattle. Dunnwald's repertoire was vast, and he was known for his interpretations of the works of some of the most celebrated composers in history, including Mozart, Beethoven, and Chopin. He was particularly renowned for his performances of Mozart's piano concertos, which he played with a sensitivity and nuance that was unmatched by his contemporaries. In addition to his performances, Dunnwald was also a respected music educator.
