Camerata Nordica is a classical music ensemble based in Sweden that has gained international recognition for its innovative and dynamic performances. The ensemble was founded in 1972 by violinist Terje Tønnesen, who remains its artistic director to this day. Tønnesen was born in Norway in 1955 and began playing the violin at a young age. He studied at the Norwegian Academy of Music and later at the Juilliard School in New York. In 1972, he founded Camerata Nordica with a group of fellow musicians who shared his passion for chamber music. The ensemble's name, which means "Northern Chamber Orchestra," reflects its focus on music from the Nordic countries. However, Camerata Nordica has also performed works by composers from around the world, including Bach, Mozart, and Beethoven. Over the years, Camerata Nordica has attracted some of the most talented musicians from Scandinavia and beyond. The ensemble's core members include Tønnesen on violin, Torbjörn Köhl on viola, and Per Nyström on cello. Other regular members include violinists Malin Broman and Cecilia Zilliacus, violist David Wärn, and cellist Andreas Brantelid. Camerata Nordica has performed at some of the world's most prestigious concert halls, including Carnegie Hall in New York, the Royal Albert Hall in London, and the Berlin Philharmonic. The ensemble has also collaborated with many renowned soloists, including pianist Leif Ove Andsnes and cellist Truls Mørk. One of Camerata Nordica's most notable achievements was its performance of all of Bach's Brandenburg Concertos in a single concert in 2010. The concert, which took place at the Uppsala Konsert & Kongress in Sweden, was hailed as a triumph of musicianship and endurance. Camerata Nordica has also won numerous awards and accolades for its recordings. The ensemble's album "Baltic Voyage," which features music from the Baltic countries, won the prestigious Diapason d'Or award in 2011. The ensemble's recording of Mozart's Violin Concertos with soloist Malin Broman was also highly praised by critics. In addition to its performances and recordings, Camerata Nordica is committed to music education and outreach. The ensemble has a youth orchestra program that provides young musicians with the opportunity to perform with professional musicians and learn from them. Camerata Nordica also regularly performs in schools and other community settings, bringing classical music to audiences who might not otherwise have access to it. Overall, Camerata Nordica is a testament to the power of chamber music to inspire and delight audiences around the world. With its commitment to excellence, innovation, and education, the ensemble is sure to continue making a lasting impact on the classical music world for years to come.
