Born on June 12, 1932, in Durban, South Africa, she was the youngest of four children. Her father was a Dutch Reformed Church minister, and her mother was a music teacher. Coertse's love for music was evident from a young age, and she began singing in her church choir at the age of six. Coertse's musical talent was recognized early on, and she was awarded a scholarship to study at the University of Pretoria. She completed her studies in 1953 and made her professional debut the same year in the role of Micaela in Bizet's Carmen. Her performance was well-received, and she was soon offered a contract with the Vienna State Opera. Coertse's time in Vienna was a turning point in her career. She made her debut at the Vienna State Opera in 1954, singing the role of the Queen of the Night in Mozart's The Magic Flute.
